“There is smoke in the mountains near camp”

This is the call I received on Saturday, June 23rd.  Quickly driving to a lookout less than two miles from camp, I saw the Waldo Canyon Fire moving up the mountains toward Eagle Lake Camp.  The following 24 hours were full of preparation in case the fire came. We spent that time collecting sleeping bags for staff, moving cars, setting up sprinklers, shutting down gas lines, moving propane tanks and watering down our buildings. We left Eagle Lake with a lot of unknowns: when we could come back, what it would look like and if we would have camp again this summer? As time went on, we received incredible answers to those questions and realized our lives would be changed forever.
